IPM Tips: Structural Entry Points
If a pest can not gain access into a structure, they have no chance of becoming established on the inside. We recommend that you inspect your home for any structural problem that could allow pest access twice annually, in the spring and again in the early fall.
Safety Note: NEVER seal an entry point that stinging insects are using to gain access into the home until the nest is confirmed to be eliminated! Doing so could cause them to gain access into the home.
- Check screen doors and window screens for soundness and a tight fit
- Check door frames and door sweeps for a proper fit
- Check garage door seals for damage
- Inspect utility inlet pipes and fill openings
- Seal areas around vents exiting the building
- Fill cracks or opening in foundation or sill plate
- Caulk openings in corners of soffits
- Confirm all crawl space vents and basement windows are sound
- Trim back all vegetation from home especially tree limbs touching the structure or fence lines that touch the structure
